Psychologist vs psychiatrist: psychiatrists are medical doctors (MBBS followed by a specialisation in psychiatry) who can prescribe medication. Psychologists come from a psychology degree background and focus on assessment, therapy and research.
How do you become a licensed clinical psychologist in India?
This is one of the most important points for families to understand. To practise as a clinical psychologist in India, you must complete a professional programme approved by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and register with it. A regular MA or MSc in Psychology alone does not qualify you for this.
The route is changing. For many years, the RCI-approved qualification was an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology. That programme is being phased out and replaced by a new RCI-regulated master's in Clinical Psychology, with the transition taking place around the 2025–26 and 2026–27 academic years. Always check the latest RCI list of approved programmes and institutes before applying.
Other psychology careers, such as counselling, school, organisational and research roles, follow different routes, usually through a master's in the relevant specialisation.
