Exploring options
They can quickly list careers linked to a subject or interest, including ones students and parents may not know about.
Many students now ask ChatGPT and other AI chatbots, “What career should I choose?” These tools can be genuinely helpful for exploring options and understanding courses. But they do not know you, they can be confidently wrong, and they cannot take responsibility for a decision that shapes your life. Here is how to use them well.
They can quickly list careers linked to a subject or interest, including ones students and parents may not know about.
They can explain what a job involves, what a course covers, or how two options differ.
They can help you practise interview answers, draft a CV or plan a study timetable.
These are the reasons an AI chatbot should not be your only source of career advice.
| AI chatbot | Career counsellor with assessment | |
|---|---|---|
| Knows you | Only what you type, which may be incomplete or biased | Uses a structured assessment of interests, abilities, personality and values |
| Accuracy | Can give outdated or wrong facts about exams, eligibility and colleges, very confidently | Checks current requirements and official sources |
| Your situation | Cannot see family context, budget or pressure from others | Discusses with the student and parents together |
| Responsibility | Gives an answer and moves on | Stays accountable and follows up on the plan |
| Privacy | Personal details may be stored by the service | Kept within a professional relationship |

It can give general career information and help you explore options. It cannot assess your interests, abilities and personality properly, may give outdated or wrong facts, and does not know your situation. Use it to explore, then decide with people who know you and a professional assessment.
Sometimes, but not reliably. AI chatbots can state wrong exam rules or outdated information confidently. Always check important facts on official websites.
AI can support career exploration, but it cannot replace a validated assessment, a discussion with the family, or professional accountability for advice.
